Boeing Jet Panel Loss Sparks Washington Hearing Investigation

A panel that detached from a Boeing 737 Max during an Alaska Airlines flight was showcased to the media at the National Transportation Safety Board's (NTSB) laboratory in Washington, D.C. This panel will be central to a two-day investigative hearing scheduled for next week.

Boeing Panel Incident Leads to Hearing

Federal investigators have been scrutinising the mid exit door plug since it blew off on January 5. The incident occurred when the plane was at 16,000 feet and ascending to cruise altitude. The panel was later found in a backyard near Portland, Oregon.

Missing Bolts and Initial Findings

A preliminary report from the NTSB revealed that four bolts, crucial for securing the part to the jetliner, were missing when the plane left a Boeing factory near Seattle. This was before its delivery to Alaska Airlines.

Door plugs are designed to seal holes left for additional doors when the number of seats does not necessitate more emergency exits. From inside the aircraft, these plugs resemble regular windows.

Installation and Maintenance Details

The door plug on the Alaska Airlines plane was initially installed at a Spirit AeroSystems facility in Wichita, Kansas. However, it was removed at Boeing's plant so workers could repair damaged rivets.

These plugs are only meant to be opened for maintenance and inspections. The NTSB intends to use information from the upcoming hearing to finalise its investigation and make safety recommendations.

The hearing will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday. It aims to gather comprehensive details about the blowout incident and ensure such occurrences do not happen in the future.
