The Indian Premier League has witnessed one of its most significant player trades, with wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant returning to Delhi Capitals while spinner Kuldeep Yadav moves to Lucknow Super Giants. According to an official IPL release, former Lucknow Super Giants captain Rishabh Pant will rejoin Delhi Capitals, the franchise where he spent the first nine years of his IPL career. In exchange, left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav will move to Lucknow Super Giants.

The trade also brings significant changes to player salaries. Pant, who was bought by LSG for a record-breaking Rs 27 crore during the IPL 2025 auction, will now earn Rs 15 crore per season with Delhi Capitals. Kuldeep, meanwhile, joins LSG on his existing contract worth Rs 13.50 crore.

The IPL release said: "Former Lucknow Super Giants captain Rishabh Pant is set for a return to Delhi Capitals (DC), while Kuldeep Yadav will join Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), following one of the most significant player trades in recent IPL history."

Why Is Pant's Return To Delhi Capitals Significant?

Pant's return reunites him with the franchise where he built his IPL identity. Between 2016 and 2024, the explosive batter played 111 matches for Delhi Capitals, the highest by any player in the franchise's history.

He was also one of the team's most influential leaders, captaining Delhi in 43 matches across four seasons from 2021 to 2024. During that period, Pant became one of the faces of the franchise and played a key role in its growth as a competitive IPL side.

The IPL release noted: "Pant returns to the franchise where he spent nine seasons between 2016 and 2024, making 111 appearances - the most by any player for DC. One of the defining faces of the franchise for nearly a decade, he also captained the side in 43 matches across four seasons from 2021 to 2024."

His return comes after a difficult IPL 2026 campaign with Lucknow Super Giants, following which he stepped down as captain.

What Led To Pant's Exit From Lucknow Super Giants?

Pant's stint with LSG began in historic fashion when the franchise secured him for Rs 27 crore at the IPL 2025 Player Auction, making him the most expensive player ever purchased in IPL history.

The IPL release stated: "At the TATA IPL 2025 Player Auction, Pant was acquired by LSG for a record-breaking INR 27 crore - the highest winning bid in IPL history. Following the trade, he will rejoin DC at a revised fee of INR 15 crore."

Despite the massive investment, Lucknow endured a disappointing IPL 2026 season. Pant eventually stepped down from the captaincy, paving the way for a move back to his former franchise.

Why Could Kuldeep Be A Key Signing For LSG?

While Delhi regain a proven match-winner in Pant, Lucknow strengthen their bowling attack with one of India's most successful white-ball spinners.

Kuldeep enjoyed an impressive five-year spell with Delhi Capitals after joining the franchise in 2022. During that period, he claimed 72 wickets in 65 matches and emerged as one of the tournament's most effective wicket-taking bowlers.

The IPL release said: "Kuldeep joins LSG after a highly successful spell with Delhi Capitals lasting five seasons. Since arriving at the franchise in 2022, the left-arm wrist spinner has claimed 72 wickets in 65 matches and established himself as one of the most effective wicket-taking bowlers in the tournament."

The release further added: "One of India's premier white-ball bowlers, Kuldeep will join LSG at his existing fee of INR 13.50 crore."

For Lucknow, Kuldeep's arrival offers a proven wicket-taking option and strengthens their spin department, while Delhi secure the return of a player who remains one of the most recognisable figures in the franchise's history.
