'August 15 Mourning In Bangladesh': Sheikh Hasina's Call Sparks Controversy Amid Holiday Cancellation
Sheikh Hasina fled Bangladesh after resigning from her position as Prime Minister, seeking refuge in India, on August 5. Almost ten days later, on August 13, she broke her silence with a statement released by her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy.
In this statement, the former Bangladesh Prime Minister urged the people of Bangladesh to observe August 15 - the anniversary of the assassination of her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman - as 'National Mourning Day.'

August 15 Mourning In Bangladesh: Sheikh Hasina
Her appeal came shortly after the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government decided to cancel the national holiday traditionally observed on August 15. A press release from the Chief Adviser's Office stated that the decision was made unanimously after discussions with the council of advisers and political parties. This cancellation marks a significant shift in the observance of a day deeply rooted in Bangladesh's history and national identity.
Sheikh Hasina's Plea to Bangladesh
In her first public statement since fleeing the country, Hasina addressed the recent unrest and protests that have swept through Bangladesh. She called for justice against those involved in what she described as "terror acts," killings, and vandalism. Her statement coincided with news that she had been booked for murder, adding to the intense political and social turmoil in the country.
In her message, Hasina demanded a thorough investigation into the recent violence and urged that those responsible be identified and punished. She also called on the people of Bangladesh to commemorate August 15 with due dignity and solemnity, emphasizing the importance of remembering her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who was assassinated on this day in 1975.
"I sympathize with those like me who continue to live with the pain of losing near and dear ones," Hasina said. "I demand a proper investigation to identify those involved in these killings and terror acts and appropriate punishment for them. I appeal to you to observe the National Mourning Day on August 15 with due dignity and solemnity."
She also expressed grief over the recent burning of the Bangabandhu Museum during the violence, describing it as an attack on the memory and inspiration that the museum represented. Hasina urged Bangladeshis to offer prayers and leave wreaths at the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum premises in honour of her father.
The Significance of National Mourning Day
Each year, August 15 is observed as National Mourning Day in Bangladesh to honour the memory of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the nation's first president and the architect of its independence. Rahman, also known as 'Bangabandhu' (Friend of Bengal), led Bangladesh's struggle for independence from Pakistan and is revered as the father of the nation.
On August 15, 1975, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members were brutally assassinated in a military coup. The only survivors were his daughters, Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana, who were abroad at the time. The massacre left a lasting scar on Bangladesh, and it was only in 1996, when Hasina's Awami League came to power, that August 15 was declared a National Mourning Day. Although the observance was scrapped by subsequent governments, a 2008 high court order reinstated it as a public holiday.
Traditionally, National Mourning Day has been marked by a public holiday, the hoisting of black flags alongside the national flag at half-mast, and various commemorative events organized by Awami League leaders.
Controversy Over the Cancellation of the August 15 Holiday
The interim government's decision to cancel the holiday on August 15 has sparked widespread controversy. The Yunus-led government approved the cancellation after consultations with political parties, excluding the Awami League. The decision appears to be influenced by the intense public sentiment against Sheikh Hasina, which has been growing in the wake of her resignation and the violent protests that followed.
Protesters recently stormed the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum, dedicated to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, looting and setting it ablaze. They also vandalized a statue of Rahman in Dhaka, an act that shocked many and was widely condemned, including by India's Biocon founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, who called it a "sad day for Bangladesh."
The desecration of Rahman's statue has been interpreted by some as an expression of the protesters' rejection of Hasina's rule, which they view as autocratic. Others see it as a reflection of Bangladesh's complex relationship with its own history and the role of Islamic conservatism in shaping public attitudes towards statues and monuments.
A Potential Crisis for the Interim Government
With Sheikh Hasina now calling for the observance of National Mourning Day despite the government's cancellation of the holiday, there is concern that her appeal could lead to further unrest. The interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, may face additional challenges as it attempts to navigate the delicate political landscape and maintain order.
The cancellation of the August 15 holiday and the broader political turmoil in Bangladesh underscore the deep divisions within the country and the ongoing struggle over its national identity. As tensions continue to rise, the actions of both the interim government and Sheikh Hasina will likely have significant implications for the future of Bangladesh.
