Argentine Leader Milei Chooses Far-Right Gathering in Brazil Over Regional Summit

Argentine President Javier Milei opted for a far-right convention over a presidential summit on regional trade policy. On Sunday, he was in Brazil to headline the country's version of CPAC, the conservative political action conference, alongside former President Javier Bolsonaro in Balneario Camboriu. This decision came just days after Bolsonaro was indicted by federal police for allegedly embezzling Saudi diamonds.

Milei Picks Far-Right Event Over Summit

Since taking office last December, Milei has distanced himself from Brazil's left-wing President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. The two leaders have clashed ideologically, with Milei branding Lula a communist and refusing to engage with him. Lula has responded by demanding an apology for what he called Milei's nonsense. Their strained relationship was evident at the Group of Seven summit in Italy last month, where they avoided each other as much as possible.

Foreign Policy Gamble

Milei's foreign policy approach has been provocative, favouring alliances with hard-right figures over traditional diplomatic channels. This strategy has drawn criticism from experts who view it as counterproductive. Michael Shifter, a scholar at the Inter-American Dialogue in Washington, remarked, "It is shocking and counterproductive for him to thumb his nose at Lula in this way because there could be a lot of cost for Argentina, that could affect his ability to carry out his policies."

The Argentine leader's actions have also sparked political turmoil in Spain. Earlier this year, Milei shunned meetings with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's socialist government and instead spoke at a far-right rally organised by Spain's Vox Party. This led to a diplomatic crisis when Milei called Sánchez's wife corrupt, prompting Spain to withdraw its ambassador from Buenos Aires.

Economic Implications

Argentina's economic situation is dire, with the local currency hitting a historic low of 1,430 pesos per dollar on the black market last week. Experts warn that Argentina has much more to lose than Brazil in this escalating feud. Cristian Buttié, director of pollster CB Consultora, emphasised the high stakes involved.

Despite making five trips to the United States since taking office, Milei has yet to visit the White House. He has met former US President Donald Trump at CPAC in Washington and bonded with Tesla executive Elon Musk in Texas over their shared love of free markets. However, these international engagements have not translated into tangible benefits for Argentina.

Bolsonaro posted a video on Sunday showing him greeting Milei warmly before they posed for photos with their national flags. The night before, Bolsonaro opened the Brazilian CPAC with a speech supporting Trump's return to the White House next year. He and Milei were later seen together watching Uruguay defeat Brazil in the 2024 Copa America.

Domestic Reactions

Milei's frequent international trips have drawn criticism at home. Fabio Rodriguez, director at Buenos Aires-based consultancy M&R Asociados, noted that while some Argentines admire Milei's international presence, polls indicate growing discontent. Many feel abandoned as their president spends time abroad while domestic issues remain unresolved.

Experts believe that attending the Mercosur trade bloc summit would have provided Milei an opportunity to ease tensions with Brazil. Brazil is Argentina's largest trading partner, buying nearly a sixth of its exports and supporting its bids for aid from the International Monetary Fund. Instead, Milei chose to escalate his feud with Lula.

Milei's actions reflect his desire to present himself as a rockstar of international politics. However, this strategy may be backfiring as domestic pressures mount and Argentina's economic crisis worsens. The long-term consequences of his foreign policy decisions remain uncertain but could significantly impact Argentina's future relations and economic stability.

Milei’s approach continues to draw both admiration and criticism within Argentina and beyond its borders. His choices on the international stage are closely watched as they could shape Argentina’s diplomatic and economic landscape for years to come.
