India had recently petitioned China after it was learnt that Modi could be in Hong Kong. China had said that it would not interfere with the process and added that it was up to Hong Kong to look into the matter as per the laws.
A CBI spokesperson when asked about Modi refused to comment. Officials believe that he may have left Hong Kong sometime in March for New York. It is also said that he may leave New York too.
Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi left India in January before the CBI had filed the FIR in the Rs 13,000 crore fraud case. Despite multiple summonses issued by the Enforcement Directorate, the duo has refused to return for questioning. Both the CBI and the ED have approached the Interpol seeking issuance of a Red Corner Notice against the duo.
Based on concrete inputs, India had said that Nirav Modi was holed up in Hong Kong where he has business interests. However, investigations later showed that he may have left Hong Kong. India had revoked Modi's passport, despite which he has managed to travel to several countries. Investigations are on to ascertain how Modi has been travelling despite his passport being revoked.
