Tragedy In Hong Kong: 11-Month-Old Baby Dies In Milk Choking Incident

An 11-month-old baby in Hong Kong died after choking on milk, on Wednesday. The police were called by the baby boy's 25-year-old mother when the 11-month-old seemed to have choked while drinking milk and lost consciousness, according to the South China Morning Post (SCMP).

Emergency services rushed the baby to a hospital in Hong Kong after arriving at the home in the city's San Po Kong area. Despite the efforts of hospital staff, the boy succumbed soon after. The baby had a cold and fever and had seen a doctor two days before the incident, reported the Chinese media outlet.

Hong Kong Baby Dies On Milk Choking

On Wednesday, while being fed milk by his mother, he started vomiting. Despite her attempts to pat him on the back, he lost consciousness, leading her to seek assistance. The incident is currently under investigation.

Choking poses a potential concern for infants and toddlers due to their developing swallowing reflexes, which may not be fully coordinated. According to Healthline, the most common reason for a baby choking during breastfeeding is that the milk is coming out faster than the baby can swallow.

If the baby experiences gagging while drinking from a bottle, it is often attributed to the positions, as noted by experts. Signs of oversupply include restlessness at the breast, coughing, choking, or gulping milk.

To prevent the baby from choking on breast milk, one of the first steps that can be taken is changing the feeding position. In the case of bottle feeding, the use of a technique called paced bottle feeding is suggested by experts.

This technique allows the baby to actively pull milk out of the bottle using their sucking skills and permits them to take a break easily when needed, as explained by the outlet.

Meanwhile, in another similar incident, a 5-month-old baby girl in Brazil died after choking on milk at a daycare facility. According to Newsweek, the incident occurred last year in September. The baby was taken to the hospital, where the doctor attempted to resuscitate the child after noting signs of milk aspiration and cardiorespiratory arrest.

Notably, aspiration happens when something enters the lungs or airways accidentally. This can occur with liquids, food, and any other materials that are ingested, causing potentially serious health issues. It is more common in children, particularly young ones and premature babies, who may have difficulty swallowing.
