Mamata Banerjee Appeals for Streamlined Teacher Recruitment Amid Vacancy Crisis
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has urged the court to establish a system for prompt recruitment of teachers, addressing the substantial number of vacancies in schools. She emphasized the states readiness to fill the positions but expressed concern over court cases allegedly initiated by leaders of opposition parties, which have impeded the recruitment process.
Bardhaman, West Bengal: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has urged the court to establish a system for immediate recruitment to fill the approximately 60,000 to 70,000 vacant teaching positions in the state's schools. She emphasized that the state is prepared to fill the vacancies but is hindered by court cases allegedly initiated by leaders of the CPIM, Congress, and BJP.

Court Cases Hinder Recruitment Process
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) are investigating alleged irregularities in appointments in state-run schools following cases filed at the Calcutta High Court. Several leaders from the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) have been arrested in connection with the scam.
"We have thousands of vacancies for teachers, but because of court cases, we are unable to make appointments. At least 60-70 thousand people could have been appointed at schools only," Banerjee lamented.
Political Interference in Recruitment
The chief minister made these remarks during a government-organized public distribution program and administrative review meeting held in the Purba Bardhaman district. She criticized certain leaders from the CPIM, Congress, and BJP for approaching the court and filing cases to halt the recruitment process.
"These days, people do not win elections but go to court," Banerjee said.
Respect for Judiciary
Banerjee acknowledged that the court aims to rectify mistakes, but she expressed frustration that the government's hands are tied due to legal proceedings. She emphasized her respect for the judiciary and clarified that she is not against any particular judge.
"Being a lawyer, I know that a judgment can be criticized. I would appeal to the honorable court to formulate a system so that the vacancies are filled up and thousands of youths are recruited," she said.
Inauguration of Projects
During the meeting, Banerjee also inaugurated a range of projects for the Purba and Paschim Bardhaman districts. According to officials, she inaugurated a total of 491 projects worth Rs 365.45 crores.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's appeal to the court highlights the challenges faced by the West Bengal government in filling vacant teaching positions due to ongoing court cases. The state's education system suffers from a shortage of qualified teachers, affecting the quality of education for thousands of students. It remains to be seen how the court will respond to Banerjee's request and whether a solution can be found to expedite the recruitment process.
