TN cabinet sworn in with Edapaddi Palanisami as CM

The oath-taking ceremony marked the end of a 10-day long political turmoil in Tamil Nadu

Edapaddi Palanisami took over as the 13th chief minister of Tamil Nadu on Thursday. He was administered the oath of office by Governor of Tamil Nadu (and Maharashtra) Vidyasagar Rao. The Raj Bhavan which was packed with AIADMK supporters chanting long live Amma and long live Chinamma.

The swearing-in ceremony was a complete contrast compared with the earlier ones. After Jayalalithaa was sent to jail in 2015, O Panneerselvam and the rest of the ministers took oath with handkerchiefs in their hands. All had photographs of Jayalalithaa in their pockets and wiped their tears as they took oath. A similar scenario was witnessed when OPS was again sworn in following the death of Jayalalithaa.

Following this, the rest of the 30 ministers were administered the oath of office by Rao. The oath-taking ceremony marked the end of a 10-day long political turmoil in Tamil Nadu. The state had plunged into political crisis after O Paneerselvam resigned as the CM. A day later, he claimed that he was humiliated and forced to resign. While the governor accepted his resignation, he was asked to continue as the caretaker CM.

Convicted AIADMK interim general secretary Sasikala Natarajan then met with the governor and staked a claim to form the government. However she was not invited the form the government and on Tuesday she was convicted by the Supreme Court in disproportionate assets case.

PIL dismissed

Meanwhile, the Madras high court dismissed a petition seeking a stay on Palanisamy's swearing-in ceremony. The petition filed by an advocate claimed that the chief minister should be chosen only after a floor test in the state assembly. The petition demanded that the governor should invite a leader to form the government in Tamil Nadu only after majority support for him is proven in the assembly.

The public intrerest litigation was filed by advocate N Jothi who is said to have been a long time associate of late J Jayalalithaa. Once a Rajya Sabha MP, Jothi is now with the DMK.

The peition was filed and dismissed hours before Palanisamy took the oath of office as Tamil Nadu chief minister.
