Tiruvallur Train Accident: 5 Major Train Accidents This Year

The recent Mysore-Darbhanga Bagmati Express near Tiruvallur in Tamil Nadu marks a concerning spike in train accidents across India. Early on Tuesday, July 30, 2024 the passenger train collided with a dera goods carrier, tragically resulting in the loss of two lives and leaving over 20 individuals injured. This incident adds to a worrisome trend, being the third such occurrence in just the last two months and the sixth within the year. Union Minister of Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, has come under scrutiny due to the recurring rail accidents over the past year. Despite these challenges, Vaishnaw has emphasized the ministry's commitment to safety. In his post-budget remarks in the Lok Sabha, he stated, "Safety is our top priority." He further highlighted the allocation of ₹1,08,795 crore specifically for enhancing safety measures, out of the ministry's total budget of ₹2,62,200 crore.

Among the tragic accidents this year, the Jamtara train incident on February 28, 2024, stands out. It occurred when passengers of the Anga Express disembarked after a stop, triggered by the pulling of the train's chain amid false alarm of a fire, only to be hit by an oncoming local train near the Kaljariya railway crossing in Jharkhand's Jamtara district. This mishap resulted in two fatalities and several injuries.

Another significant derailment involved a goods train near Palghar station, Maharashtra, on March 29, 2024. The incident not only disrupted the crucial rail link between Surat and Mumbai but also raised questions regarding the infrastructure's integrity as a rail fracture was discovered close to the site. Whether the fracture was a cause or a consequence of the derailment remains uncertain.

The list of accidents extends to a collision near Sirhind on June 2, 2024, where eight coaches of a goods carrier crashed into a freight train. This accident affected the schedule of 59 trains, necessitating the diversion of 51. Although only minor injuries were reported among passengers, the goods carrier's pilot and assistant pilot sustained severe injuries.

Further aggravating concerns was the Kanchanjunga Express accident on June 17, 2024. The passenger train collided with a goods train near Rangapani railway station in Darjeeling district, claiming at least nine lives and injuring about 41 people. The incident sparked a political debate over the alleged failure of the signalling system, which was blamed for the collision. The drivers of both trains did not survive, and rail authorities faced criticism for purportedly attributing the crash to the loco pilot's speed prematurely.

The series of unfortunate events continued with the Chandigarh-Dibrugarh train derailment on July 18, 2024, in Uttar Pradesh's Gonda district. Twelve coaches of the 15904 Dibrugarh-Chandigarh Express veered off the tracks, resulting in at least four deaths and 31 injuries. A probe into this accident suggested that improper fastening of rail tracks might have been the cause, noting that an immediate removal (IMR) defect had previously been identified by a senior engineer.
