Delhi Weather Update: IMD Issues Red Alert As Heavy Rain And Thunderstorms Lash NCR

The city of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) experienced heavy rains and thunderstorms on Tuesday, bringing relief from the hot and humid weather. Due to the unexpected heavy rainfall, the weather turned cold in some parts and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of an extended rainy period in the coming days. The national capital has been put on a red alert, and the temperature is expected to remain in the 32-37 degree Celsius range during the day.

IMD Predicts Rain And Thunderstorms Across Delhi-NCR

Weather will be of similar nature across all the districts of Delhi-NCR, IMD's district-wise forecast stated. This involves the various regions of the country, such as North, South, East, West, Central, New Delhi, North West, North East, South West, South East, Shahdara, Faridabad, Gurugram, Noida and Ghaziabad.

The weather department has issued a red alert for July 7 and has predicted generally cloudy conditions with "a spell of rain at several places," thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds of 30-40 kmph throughout the day with a maximum of 50 kmph during the afternoon. Additional rain will then occur later in the evening.

Wet Spell Expected To Continue Till July 11

The IMD says that the weather will be similar on July 8 when light rain, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are expected during the afternoon.

Light to moderate rain will occur at isolated locations with thunderstorms and high speed winds in the morning and forenoon on July 9. It should be a few light to light rain drops tonight.

The warning will be reduced to a green alert for July 10 and 11. The weather department, however, has forecast generally cloudy weather with occasional very light to light rain, thunderstorms and lightning in the forenoon and afternoon hours for both days.

The IMD has rated the chances of rains occurring on all five days as "Likely" (with a 25 to 50 per cent probability).

Southwest Monsoon Advances Further Across India

The Southwest Monsoon moved further into more areas in Gujarat, Rajasthan and Haryana on Tuesday. The IMD stated favorable conditions are in place for the monsoon to sweep the remaining areas of the North Arabian Sea, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab and the rest of the country in the next two to three days.

The weather department has also warned of very heavy rainfall at localised places in Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra and Gujarat on July 7 with Kerala and Karnataka also set to receive intense rains. The situation is likely to remain similar over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on July 8.

Heavy Rainfall And Flash Flood Risk In Several States

The intensity of rainfall was reported by several locations in the last 24 hours. The highest rain recorded was 53 cm in Lonavala, Madhya Maharashtra; 43 cm in Wada, Palghar and 27 cm in Silvassa, Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

The IMD has predicted widespread rainfall across Haryana, Chandigarh and Punjab on July 7-9 with isolated heavy rainfall over the region during July 7-8. There is also a high possibility of heavy rainfall in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand areas.

In the meantime, moderate flash flood risk has been observed in some parts of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Mumbai, Palghar, Pune, Satara, Kolhapur and coastal Karnataka in the next 24 hours. The IMD has urged rescue teams and the local authorities to stay alert in the affected areas.
