Court Summons Telangana CM in Defamation Case Filed by BJP

A special court has summoned Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy to appear on September 25. This follows a criminal defamation case filed by a BJP leader, accusing him of making false allegations against the party during the recent Lok Sabha election campaign.

Defamation Allegations

The Special Judicial First Class Magistrate (JFCM) for Excise Cases issued the summons after reviewing documents and hearing arguments. The court found a prima facie case under Sections 499, 171C, 171G, 153 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 125 of the Representation of Peoples Act.

Telangana BJP General Secretary Kasam Venkateshwarlu filed the complaint. He accused Reddy of making misleading statements during a May 4 election meeting in Bhadradri Kothagudem district. Reddy allegedly claimed that if the BJP were elected, it would change the Constitution and abolish reservations.

Legal Proceedings

The BJP argued that these statements harmed the party's reputation among voters. They claimed Reddy's remarks were intended to unduly influence voters, constituting election offences under the law. The Special JFCM for Excise Cases examined witnesses and reviewed materials before deciding to issue the summons.

Earlier, the Special JFCM had adjourned the complaint. Dissatisfied, the BJP leader approached the Telangana High Court with a criminal petition. The High Court directed the lower court to expedite proceedings and decide on the complaint in accordance with the law.

In June, the High Court instructed the Special JFCM to conduct day-to-day hearings to speed up the process. The court disposed of the criminal petition with these directions, ensuring swift action on the complaint.

The court's decision to summon Reddy underscores the seriousness of defamation allegations in political campaigns. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for political discourse and accountability in India.
