Fatwas Credited for Shiv Sena-UBT Election Wins in Mumbai, Minister Reveals
In a recent statement, Shiv Sena leader Deepak Kesarkar highlighted the influence of fatwas on the electoral success of the rival Shiv Sena UBT in Maharashtra's Lok Sabha seats. According to Kesarkar, these religious decrees played a pivotal role in swaying Muslim voters towards Uddhav Thackeray's faction, suggesting a departure from Hindutva ideologies. This shift reportedly contributed to the Shiv Sena UBT's victory in three out of six Lok Sabha seats in the Mumbai region, amidst a broader electoral context where the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition secured 31 of Maharashtra's 48 seats.

The election saw the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction winning seven out of the 15 seats it contested, while the BJP-led NDA coalition fell short of its ambitious target, capturing only 17 seats statewide. Kesarkar's comments underscored the significant impact of minority votes on the election outcomes, suggesting that without Muslim support, Shiv Sena UBT candidates would have faced substantial defeats.
Further allegations by Kesarkar pointed towards external influences and internal community dynamics shaping the electoral landscape. He claimed that a conspiracy originating from Pakistan aimed at undermining Prime Minister Narendra Modi had found resonance among some Indian voters. Additionally, Kesarkar accused the opposition of misleading Dalit communities with claims of potential changes to the Constitution and highlighted how debates around Maratha versus OBC dynamics influenced voting patterns in certain areas.
The Maratha movement and its implications for regional politics were also touched upon by Kesarkar, noting that the Mahayuti coalition, comprising BJP, Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar's NCP, managed only a single seat victory in the Marathwada region—a focal point of Maratha agitation. These developments suggest a complex interplay of religious, caste, and regional identities in Maharashtra's political arena, warranting further analysis to understand their broader implications on future electoral strategies and alliances.
Kesarkar's assertions reflect ongoing tensions within Shiv Sena factions and highlight challenges facing political parties in addressing diverse voter bases. The role of religious decrees, community allegiances, and regional movements in shaping electoral outcomes underscores the multifaceted nature of Indian politics, where strategic appeals to various voter segments can significantly influence election results.
