Nirmala Sitharaman, India's current Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister, was born on August 18, 1959, in Madurai to Savitri and Narayanan Sitharaman, Nirmala hailed from a Tamil Iyengar Brahmin family. Her father worked for the Indian Railways, and her family had roots in Musiri, Tiruchirappalli, Thiruvenkadu, and the Thanjavur and Salem districts of Tamil Nadu. Nirmala Sitharaman finished her schooling in Madras and Tiruchirappalli. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College in Tiruchirappalli. In 1984, she moved to Delhi to complete her Master of Arts and M.Phil in economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). Subsequently, Sitharaman went for a PhD program in Economics but could not complete the course.

Before entering politics, Sitharaman's professional journey took her to London, where she worked as a salesperson at Habitat, a home decor store. She then transitioned to the role of assistant to an Economist at the Agricultural Engineers Association in the UK. Her career further blossomed as she took on the role of Senior Manager in the Research and Development department for PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and at the BBC World Service. Her expertise and dedication led her to serve as a member of the National Commission for Women in India.
Nirmala Sitharama's Political Journey
Nirmala Sitharaman's political career began in 2006 when she joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). She quickly rose through the ranks, serving as the party's spokesperson until 2014. Her dedication and skills were recognised when she was inducted into Narendra Modi's cabinet that year. In June 2014, she was elected as a Rajya Sabha MP from Andhra Pradesh, and in May 2016, she won the Karnataka seat in the Rajya Sabha elections.
Her ministerial roles have been diverse and impactful. She served as the Minister of Corporate Affairs and, on September 3, 2017, was appointed as the Minister of Defence. On May 31, 2019, she broke new ground by becoming India's first full-time female Finance Minister and also took on the role of Minister for Commerce and Industry. In 2022, she secured another victory in the Rajya Sabha elections, representing Karnataka. Following the 2024 general elections, her tenure as Finance Minister was extended, and she continues to hold this critical position in the Modi 3.0 cabinet.

On a personal note, Nirmala Sitharaman met her husband, Parakala Prabhakar, while studying at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). Despite their differing political ideologies-Prabhakar leaning towards the Congress party and Sitharaman towards the BJP-the couple married in 1986 and have a daughter, Parakala Vangmayi. Prabhakar served as a communications advisor to the then-Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu.
