Nirmala Sitharaman's 'Dahi-Cheeni' Moment With President Kicks Off Budget Day

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, along MoS (Finance) Pankaj Choudhary, met President Droupadi Murmu before presenting the Budget for 2024-25. This meeting, held at Rashtrapatiavan, is a customary practice. President Murmu offered 'dahi-chini' (curd-sugar), considered auspicious, to Sitharaman as she arrived.

Earlier in the day, Sitharaman posed outside the Finance Ministry with a tablet wrapped in a 'bahi khata'-styled pouch containing the Budget documents. This marks her seventh consecutive Budget presentation.

Focus on Key Areas

The Budget is anticipated to address several key areas including income tax relief, infrastructure development, job creation, and boosting farmers' income. These initiatives align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Viksit Bharat 2047 Vision.

Sitharaman chose an off-white saree with a magenta border for the occasion. She will present the first Budget of Narendra Modi's third term as Prime Minister.

Economic Projections

The Economic Survey presented in Parliament on Monday forecasts that the economy will grow by 6.5-7 per cent this fiscal year. While some populist measures may be included in the Budget, experts believe that fiscal discipline will remain a priority for the government.

This year's Budget presentation is significant as it sets the tone for economic policies and priorities under the current administration's third term. The focus on fiscal discipline suggests a balanced approach to economic growth and stability.

The meeting between Sitharaman and President Murmu underscores the importance of tradition and ceremony in India's political processes. As always, these pre-Budget rituals are closely watched by both policymakers and citizens alike.
