Manipur MLAs Demand End To President’s Rule, Seek Restoration Of Elected Government

A delegation of ten MLAs from Manipur met with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Tuesday morning, urging immediate steps to reinstate a democratically elected government in the state, which has been under President's Rule since February 13, 2025.

Addressing the media after the meeting, MLA Nishikant Sapam said the legislators were voicing the sentiments of the people, who are eager to see a return of an elected administration. "It's been more than three and a half months since President's Rule was imposed. Across all sections of society, there is a strong demand for the restoration of a popular government. That's why we met the Governor," Sapam stated.

The group submitted a formal letter signed by the MLAs, appealing for the revival of democratic governance. Sapam mentioned that the Governor was receptive to their appeal and assured them that the issue would be taken into serious consideration.

Highlighting the limitations of the current administrative setup, Sapam said, "President's Rule is no substitute for a popular government. The functioning of the state under this arrangement is not the same. All MLAs aligned with the NDA in Manipur are on the same page regarding the need for elected governance."

He further emphasized the crucial role of public support, saying, "Progress and stability are only possible with the support of the people. Without them, nothing meaningful can be achieved." Some MLAs who could not attend the meeting in person had also endorsed the appeal, which has been submitted to the Prime Minister and the central leadership.

Concluding the briefing, Sapam reiterated, "Everyone's demand is simple - we want a government elected by the people, working for the people of Manipur."

The appeal marks a significant push by the state's political leaders toward ending President's Rule and reinstating democratic rule in the violence-affected state.
