Earlier, Ujjwala Sharma, 62 had filed a complaint against Bhawani Bhatt, the Congress leader's officer on special duty and security personnel for not allowing her inside Tiwari's house.

Shekhar had earlier filed a paternity suit against Tiwari in 2008, claiming that he was his biological father. On April 24, the Delhi High Court had declared the same. The senior Congress leader accepted his relation with Shekhar and Ujjwala, even as the court's decision was pending. The court took into consideration the DNA report of Tiwari and his son Shekhar.

Ujjwala reacted to the entire ceremony in a positive manner and in an interview with ANI, she said, "I'm very happy, Tiwari ji suggested the marriage, it was a low-profile event."
