Security Ramped Up Along Odisha-Andhra Border for Upcoming Elections
In a significant move to ensure the smooth conduct of the upcoming twin elections in Odisha, security measures along the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh border have been notably enhanced. This initiative, led by senior police officials, aims to maintain peace and order during the Lok Sabha and assembly elections scheduled for May 13 and 20. The heightened security efforts come in response to directives from the Election Commission of India, emphasizing the importance of a secure electoral process.

Under the guidance of Odisha's Director General of Police (DGP), Arun Kumar Sarangi, a comprehensive strategy has been developed to oversee the election security arrangements. Sarangi convened a crucial meeting with the Superintendents of Police (SPs) from Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Boudh, and Berhampur districts, focusing on poll preparedness. These discussions have led to coordinated patrolling and checking operations along the border areas, particularly in Ganjam and Gajapati districts, where both states' police forces are actively involved.
The collaborative effort between Odisha and Andhra Pradesh police is a testament to their commitment to ensuring a fair and peaceful election. Special attention is being directed towards Kandhamal and Boudh districts due to concerns over Maoist movements. "We are chalking out a plan for the deployment of forces during the polls. We will deploy adequate security personnel to ensure free elections in these districts," stated DGP Sarangi.
Combatting Narcotics and Ensuring Security
Aside from election security, the police are also tackling narcotics, specifically targeting ganja smuggling and cultivation within the border areas. Since January, a significant crackdown has resulted in approximately 340 quintals of ganja being seized and around 700 acres of ganja plantations destroyed. This operation underscores the comprehensive approach taken by law enforcement to address all forms of criminal activity in the lead-up to the elections.
To further bolster security measures, 25 companies of central forces from Odisha have been redeployed to other states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Arunachal Pradesh for the first phase of polls held on April 19. Additionally, static surveillance teams and rapid action forces have been deployed across five districts to monitor any attempts at ganja smuggling closely. This period also saw the execution of 4,300 warrants in these districts, highlighting the extensive preparatory work undertaken by the police.
The concerted efforts by the police forces of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh reflect their dedication to maintaining law and order during critical electoral processes. With special focus areas identified and a robust plan for force deployment in place, authorities are well-prepared to tackle any challenges that may arise during the twin elections. The crackdown on narcotics further demonstrates their commitment to eradicating criminal activities that could disrupt the peace and integrity of the electoral process.
