2025 QS Asia Rankings: IIT-Delhi Emerges As Top Indian University
In the latest 2025 QS Asia University Rankings, IIT-Delhi has emerged as the leading university from India, securing the 44th position across Asia, which marks a notable ascent by two places from the previous year. This achievement places it ahead of IIT-Bombay, which now ranks at 48th, experiencing a drop of eight places. The rankings highlight six Indian universities within the top 100 in Asia, showcasing the country's educational prowess on the continent. The upward movement of IIT-Delhi in these rankings is attributed to the impactful research it conducts, the growing academic reputation, and the increasing number of faculty members with PhDs.
Prof Vivek Buwa, the head of IIT-D's ranking cell and dean of planning, emphasized the institution's focus on technological advancement, startups, and tackling societal problems. "There's a lot of emphasis on tech advancement, startups and solving problems that will help society," he stated, underscoring the institute's commitment to contributing positively to the community and beyond.

Research and global collaborations have played a pivotal role in propelling IIT-Delhi to the apex of Indian universities in these rankings. Noteworthy is the institute's performance in specific metrics of the QS Rankings, such as 'citations per paper,' which assesses the impact of research based on the average citations received per published paper. IIT-Delhi excelled in this area, indicating the significant influence of its research globally. Another key metric where the institute stood out is 'papers/publications per faculty,' scoring an impressive 95 out of 100. With around 640 regular faculty members, the institute boasts an average of seven publications per faculty member annually.
The institute's collaboration with both national and international entities, including companies and government laboratories, has been instrumental in its rise. Prof Buwa highlighted the substantial investments made towards research infrastructure and equipment, notably through the Institutions of Eminence initiative, which allocated over Rs 200 crore for this purpose. "We collaborate with both domestic and international companies, as well as govt labs in India," Buwa shared, indicating the broad spectrum of the institute's collaborative efforts.
IIT-Delhi's academic reputation, which scored 75.4 out of 100, reflects its exceptional performance across various sub-categories, notably in 'employment reputation' where it achieved an almost perfect score of 99 out of 100 among Asian universities. The institute's efforts in forging partnerships with leading global companies, alongside the significant role played by its alumni in enhancing its reputation, are evident in its high 'employer reputation' score of 95. This reinforces IIT-Delhi's global standing and its attractiveness to prospective employers.
The institute's strategy includes actively seeking international engagement, as indicated by the launch of a master's program in Abu Dhabi in January and two undergraduate programs in September, both of which were met with enthusiastic responses. With a score of 89 out of 100 in the 'international research' parameter, IIT-Delhi's extensive global collaborations, involving nearly 116 research projects with universities worldwide, illustrate its commitment to fostering international academic and research partnerships.
In conclusion, IIT-Delhi's leadership position among Indian universities in the 2025 QS Asia University Rankings is a testament to its comprehensive approach towards education, research, and global collaboration. The institute's focus on impactful research, academic excellence, and international partnerships has not only enhanced its reputation but has also positioned it as a beacon of higher education in Asia.
