H K Dua death: veteran Indian journalist and former newspaper editor dies aged 88

H K Dua, a Padma Bhushan awardee and veteran Indian journalist, has died at 88, his family said. He led editorial operations at The Hindustan Times, The Indian Express, The Tribune, and advised two prime ministers on media. His cremation is scheduled at Lodhi Road crematorium on Thursday.

Veteran journalist H K Dua died on Wednesday, aged 88, family members said. H K Dua died peacefully during the afternoon at a private hospital. H K Dua was admitted to hospital about three weeks earlier. The cremation is scheduled for Thursday at the Lodhi Road crematorium.

H K Dua held senior editorial roles at four major Indian newspapers over several decades. H K Dua also advised two prime ministers on media matters. H K Dua later served as a diplomat and a parliamentarian. Condolences came from political leaders and journalists after the news of the death.

H K Dua career in Indian journalism

Over more than four decades, H K Dua worked across reporting, editing, and public service roles. H K Dua was known for political judgement and support for editorial independence. H K Dua was widely regarded as approachable and was respected across parties. H K Dua received the Padma Bhushan for contributions to public life and journalism.

H K Dua served as editor of The Hindustan Times from 1987 to 1994. H K Dua later became Editor-in-Chief of The Indian Express from 1994 to 1996. H K Dua was Editorial Advisor for The Times of India from 1997 to 1998. H K Dua also edited The Tribune between 2003 and 2009.

H K Dua roles in government and Rajya Sabha

H K Dua served as media advisor to Atal Behari Vajpayee and HD Deve Gowda. H K Dua also represented India abroad as ambassador to Denmark from 2001 to 2003. Born on July 1, 1937, H K Dua later entered Parliament. H K Dua was a nominated Rajya Sabha member from 2009 to 2015.

In the Rajya Sabha, H K Dua took part in debates on foreign affairs and national security. H K Dua served on key panels, including the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs. H K Dua also joined the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Home Affairs. H K Dua also served on the National Security Advisory Board.

H K Dua awards and Editors Guild of India work

H K Dua led professional bodies and received academic recognition for journalism work. H K Dua was a former president of the Editors Guild of India. H K Dua also served as the EGI general secretary from 1987 to 1989. H K Dua later served as EGI president from 1992 to 1993.

H K Dua received honorary doctorates from Punjab and Kurukshetra Universities. H K Dua also won the Durga Ratan award and the Bal Gangadhar Tilak award. These honours were in addition to the Padma Bhushan. Public tributes also highlighted H K Dua’s long record in newsrooms and public roles.

H K Dua death draws condolences

"My deepest condolences on the passing of H K Dua, a distinguished journalist, diplomat and Padma Bhushan recipient whose commitment to truth, editorial independence, and public service enriched public discourse,\" Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said on social media.

Shiromani Akali Dal President Sukhbir Singh Badal said H K Dua upheld editorial independence with unwavering integrity, sharp insight, and commitment to democratic values. \"His contributions as a journalist and an editor across leading newspapers leave behind an enduring legacy,\" he said. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said, \"A journalistic giant has left us.\"

The Editors Guild of India also expressed grief over the loss. \"Throughout his distinguished career as a journalist and public figure, Dua not only upheld the highest values of media ethics but was also a vocal champion of media freedom and free speech. The Guild is deeply saddened by his passing,\" it said.

H K Dua is survived by wife Adity and son Prashant, family members said. The family said H K Dua died peacefully in hospital after a recent admission. The cremation will be held on Thursday at the Lodhi Road crematorium. Tributes from politics and the media continued to note H K Dua’s influence on public debate.
