History made as four top High Courts have women chief justices
The Supreme Court has just one woman judge. The first woman judge of the SC was Justice Fatima Beevi.
It is probably for the first time that four major high courts in India are headed by women judges. The high courts at Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata have women chief justices now.

Indira Banerjee was recently appointed as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court. This appointment created history since it was for the first time that four major high court are headed by women judges. Moreover the Madras High Court has six women judges now.
Justice Manjula Chellur originally from Karnataka is the Chief Justice at the Bombay High Court. The Bombay High Court has 11 women judges which incidentally is the highest in Karnataka.
The Calcutta High Court is headed by Chief Justice Nishita Nirmal Mhatre. In this high court the number of women judges is just 4. Justice G Rohini is the Chief Justice at the Delhi High Court. This court has nine women judges.
In the Supreme Court there is however just one woman judge. Justice R Banumati was elevated to the SC on August 13 2014. She is due to retire on 19 July 2020. Ironically the Supreme Court saw its first woman judge only in 1989. Justice Fatima Beevi was also the first Muslim woman to be appointed to any higher judiciary.
