Himanta Biswa Sarma Escalates Row with Gaurav Gogoi Through Rs 500 Crore Defamation Claim

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has filed a Rs 500-crore defamation case against Congress leaders. The complaint targets Gaurav Gogoi, Jitendra Singh and Bhupesh Baghel. Sarma alleges their comments damaged reputation and were based on incorrect claims.

The case stems from a press conference held by the Congress leaders. During that interaction, they levelled charges that Sarma described as baseless. According to the filing, Sarma believes the remarks were politically motivated and harmed public standing.

Rs 500-crore defamation case and allegations

In the legal suit, Sarma accuses the three leaders of making "false and malicious allegations". The Chief Minister argues that such statements misled people. The amount of Rs 500 crore reflects the scale of the alleged reputational harm claimed.

The defamation action adds another dispute between the ruling party and the Congress. Court proceedings are expected to examine what was said at the press briefing.
