Himachal Pradesh Achieves 13% Reduction in Road Accidents

Himachal Pradesh has made remarkable progress in enhancing road safety, achieving a 13% decrease in road accidents, 19% fewer fatalities, and 15% less injuries in 2023 compared to the same period in 2022.

Safer Roads in Himachal: Accidents Reduced by 13%

In a positive development for road safety, Himachal Pradesh has witnessed a notable 13% decrease in the number of road accidents reported in the state this year. This encouraging trend is evident from data collected between January 1 and December 1, 2023, compared to the corresponding period in 2022, as revealed by the state police headquarters in a recent statement.

Reduction in Fatalities and Injuries

The decline in road accidents is accompanied by a significant reduction in fatalities and injuries resulting from these incidents. There has been a commendable 19% decrease in the number of deaths caused by road accidents, while injuries have also seen a notable drop of 15% during the same period.

Factors Contributing to the Decline

The reduction in road accidents is attributed to several factors, including increased awareness among drivers in Himachal Pradesh and improved identification of hazardous locations on national highways and district roads. Director General of Police (DGP) Sanjay Kundu highlighted these factors as key contributors to the positive trend, despite the state experiencing a 10% growth in road lengths and a 9% increase in vehicle registration.

Adoption of Best Practices

The state police is committed to further reducing traffic accidents by adopting best practices followed globally. This includes the use of advanced technology such as the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), breath analyzers, laser speed guns, and 4G body-worn cameras.

Enforcement and Fines

To ensure road safety, the Himachal Pradesh Police has been actively enforcing traffic rules and regulations. Over 6 lakh challans have been issued in the state through ITMS, Android phones, and other devices, resulting in fines amounting to over Rs 27 crore imposed till October 30, as shared by DIG Gurdev Chand Sharma.

Himachal Pradesh's success in reducing road accidents and fatalities serves as a commendable example for other states to emulate. By prioritizing road safety, adopting technology, and enforcing traffic rules, the state has demonstrated its commitment to protecting the lives of its citizens and ensuring safer roads for all.
