Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Advocates for Amicable Resolution of Houston Rath Yatra Dispute
Spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar emphasised the need for a peaceful resolution to the differences surrounding ISKCON's Rath Yatra celebration in the US. During a programme in Cuttack, he stated that Rath Yatra is a matter of sentiment and should not be a source of controversy. He highlighted that while Odisha celebrates the Jagannath Rath Yatra with great enthusiasm, international celebrations often adjust dates due to the lack of official holidays.

The ISKCON unit in Houston had initially planned to hold the Rath Yatra on November 9. However, this decision faced significant opposition from the Jagannath temple authorities in Puri and other organisations. As a result, ISKCON's Bhubaneswar unit announced the cancellation of the event. Despite this, the Houston unit proceeded with the celebration, substituting Lord Jagannath's idol with that of Lord Krishna, which led to widespread discontent in Odisha.
Resolution and Unity
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar drew parallels between this situation and other cultural celebrations like Diwali and Independence Day. He noted that these events are often observed on different days abroad due to local circumstances. He urged for an amicable resolution to the Houston Rath Yatra issue, similar to how such adjustments are made for other festivals.
Next month, a meeting is scheduled between ISKCON authorities and the Shree Jagannath Temple Managing Committee to discuss this matter further. This meeting aims to address concerns and find a mutually agreeable solution for future celebrations.
Political Statements
When questioned about Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's slogan "Batenge To Katenge" during election campaigns in Maharashtra and Jharkhand, Ravi Shankar commented on political rhetoric. He acknowledged that politicians often make various statements during elections, some of which may contain elements of truth and realism.
He stressed the importance of unity among Indians, reflecting on historical lessons. "Unity is essential. Had Indian kings remained united, the British could not have ruled the country," he remarked, highlighting how unity could have altered India's colonial history.
The Rath Yatra is traditionally celebrated in July. The recent controversy has sparked discussions about maintaining cultural traditions while respecting local contexts abroad. The upcoming meeting between ISKCON and temple authorities will be crucial in addressing these issues.
