Illegal construction crackdown: Delhi MCD demolishes 14 properties and seals 25 establishments

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) demolished 14 properties and sealed 25 establishments as enforcement against illegal construction continued across the city. Officials said Revenue Department checks reached 773 inspections between June 5 and June 15. Since the June 3 Malviya Nagar hotel fire, the MCD has also issued multiple show-cause notices and demolition orders.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) continued its citywide action against illegal buildings on June 15. Officials said teams demolished 14 properties and sealed 25 establishments that day. The steps formed part of a wider drive to check violations of building rules. Revenue Department inspections also rose sharply, crossing 770 checks in the last 10 days.

Officials linked the ongoing drive to tighter enforcement after the Malviya Nagar hotel fire on June 3. Since that incident, the civic body has demolished 217 properties and sealed 237 others. During the same period, the MCD also issued multiple legal directions. These included notices and orders tied to unauthorised construction and sealing action.

MCD illegal construction drive: notices and orders issued

During the enforcement period after June 3, the MCD issued 330 show-cause notices for unauthorised construction. It also sent 151 sealing show-cause notices to property owners and operators. Officials said 91 demolition orders were issued as well. On June 15 alone, the civic body issued 10 show-cause notices for unauthorised constructions. It also issued 31 sealing show-cause notices.

MCD illegal construction inspections: Revenue Department tally crosses 773

The Revenue Department’s daily inspection report recorded 29 site checks on June 15. This took the inspection total between June 5 and June 15 to 773. The report said four notices were issued in North district after inspections. It also noted a joint inspection in New Delhi district. In South West district, violations were sent to the MCD’s Najafgarh Zone.

In South East district, one inspected site was identified as an illegal construction. The report said the MCD was directed to act as per rules. Field visits were also held in South district during the day. The inspection report also listed notices issued across several districts. These followed the checks completed on June 15.

According to the same report, South district received three notices after inspections. North East and North districts received four notices each. Central and West districts received five notices each. Separately, the MCD’s daily action-taken report confirmed the day’s enforcement steps. It recorded demolition action against 14 properties. It also recorded sealing action against 25 properties on June 15.

Officials said the larger enforcement campaign began after several Delhi tragedies. These incidents were linked to civic infrastructure failures and fire safety breaches. Officials also cited corruption concerns and repeated rule violations. The MCD said the drive aims to stop illegal construction activity. Officials added that action will continue to ensure compliance with building rules and safety standards.
