Crores of Indians Continue to Live in Hunger Amid Economic Distress and Rising Suicides

Shanta Kumar, a former chief minister and Union minister, expressed deep sorrow over the recent suicide of seven family members in Panchkula. He attributed this tragedy to the worsening economic conditions in India. The family, spanning three generations, reportedly took their lives due to financial difficulties. Shanta Kumar described the incident as a soul-shaking tragedy that highlights the severe economic distress in the country.

Hunger Crisis in India Amid Economic Distress

In a statement issued on Thursday, Shanta Kumar cited alarming statistics, noting that last year 1.87 lakh people died by suicide in India, including 15,000 students. Despite being among the world's four richest countries, India has the highest suicide rate globally. This contradiction is attributed to stark economic inequality, which he described as shocking and disturbing.

Economic Inequality and Hunger

Shanta Kumar pointed out that despite India's wealth, it is home to a large number of poor and hungry people. Referring to the global hunger index, he highlighted that millions of Indians continue to live in hunger. He believes this national shame can be eradicated if Prime Minister Narendra Modi fully implements the Antyodaya Yojana launched in 1977.

He stated, "Then the slogan Modi hai toh Mumkin hai can be realised in its true spirit." Shanta Kumar emphasised that addressing hunger through effective implementation of government schemes could significantly improve living conditions for many Indians.

Population Growth Concerns

Discussing India's rising population, Shanta Kumar noted that it has grown from 35 crore in 1947 to 141 crore today. This unchecked growth has led to deforestation, housing pressure, sand mafias, traffic congestion, and severe air pollution. He mentioned how these issues have turned the national capital into a gas chamber and contributed to diseases like cancer.

He questioned why India cannot follow China's example in controlling population growth. "Had India's population been capped at 100 crore, we would not be facing today's levels of poverty and unemployment," he asserted.

Optimism for India's Future

Despite these challenges, Shanta Kumar remains hopeful about India's future under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership. He believes a new, prosperous, and powerful India is emerging. Military operations like Operation Sindoor have enhanced India's global image.

"I believe that the Prime Minister will soon take strong measures to curb the population explosion," he said. Shanta Kumar is optimistic that such actions will resolve many pressing issues facing the country today.
