Congress Slams Amit Shah for False Statements on Nehrus Kashmir Role

The Congress party in India has accused Home Minister Amit Shah of making deliberately provocative and blatantly false statements about Jawaharlal Nehrus role in Jammu and Kashmir in 1947 and 1948.

New Delhi: The Congress party has strongly criticized Union Home Minister Amit Shah for making "deliberately provocative and blatantly false statements" about India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's role in Jammu and Kashmir during 1947 and 1948. The party alleged that Shah's remarks were an attempt to undermine the Congress and India's narratives on the issue.

Shahs Kashmir Claims Debunked by Congress

Jairam Ramesh's Response

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh took to social media platform Twitter to express his disapproval of Shah's statements. He highlighted that Dr. Farooq Abdullah, a prominent Kashmiri leader, immediately called out Shah for distorting history. Ramesh emphasized that these tactics are aimed at derailing the Congress and India's narratives, and he refused to be drawn into Shah's trap.

Ramesh further recommended that Shah read Chandrasekhar Dasgupta's book, "War and Diplomacy in Kashmir," which he believes exposes many of the myths propagated by the Home Minister.

Amit Shah's Remarks in Lok Sabha

During a debate in the Lok Sabha on the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation Amendment Bill and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Amendment Bill, Shah attributed the sufferings of the people of Jammu and Kashmir to two major blunders committed by Nehru. He claimed that Nehru's decision to declare a ceasefire without securing the entire Kashmir region and his subsequent decision to take the issue to the United Nations were responsible for the loss of a significant portion of the territory to Pakistan.

Supriya Shrinate's Counter-Allegations

Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate countered Shah's claims, accusing him of spreading lies in the House on the Kashmir issue. She asserted that Shah has repeatedly exploited the wounds of Kashmiri Pandits for political gain. Shrinate pointed out that the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits occurred during the tenure of Vishwanath Pratap Singh's government, which was supported by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Shrinate further highlighted that the Home Minister in that government was Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, whom Shah later appointed as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. She also mentioned that the Governor at that time was Jagmohan, who was subsequently made a Union Minister by Shah.

Shrinate criticized the current government for failing to provide adequate support to Kashmiri Pandits, alleging that they have been forced to become homeless once again.

The Congress party's strong reaction to Amit Shah's statements reflects the ongoing political tensions and differing narratives surrounding the history of Jammu and Kashmir. The accusations and counter-accusations underscore the complexity and sensitivity of the issue, which continues to be a source of debate and controversy in India.
