Previous Rounds of Dialogue and Farmer Leaders' Participation

This meeting marked the third round of talks between the government and the protesting farmers. The previous two rounds of dialogue, held on February 8 and 12, did not yield conclusive outcomes. Among the farmer leaders participating in the meeting were prominent figures such as SKM Non-Political leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal and Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee general secretary Sarwan Singh Pandher. Their presence ensured that the discussions represented the diverse voices and concerns within the farming community.

Farmers' Protest and Demands

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha Non-Political and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha have issued a "Delhi Chalo" call, urging the BJP-led Central government to accept their demands. In response, farmers from Punjab embarked on a march towards the national capital on Tuesday. However, they faced resistance from security personnel at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana, leading to a tense standoff.

Farmers' Protest Spreads to Railway Tracks and Toll Plazas

In a separate development, farmers resorted to squatting on railway tracks at various locations in Punjab to express their solidarity with the "Delhi Chalo" protesters and protest against the Haryana Police's actions. The Bharatiya Kisan Union Ekta Ugrahan and the BKU Dakaunda Dhaner spearheaded this rail roko call. The decision stemmed from the use of tear-gas shells and water cannons against the protesting farmers by the Haryana security personnel at the border points.

Demonstrations at Toll Plazas and Solidarity Actions

Additionally, farmers organized demonstrations at several toll plazas in Punjab, responding to the call of the SKM. These protests aimed to further express their disapproval of the Haryana Police's actions. The farmers successfully compelled the toll authorities to allow commuters to pass without paying any toll fees, demonstrating their collective strength and determination.

Clashes with Police and Farmers' Demands

On Tuesday, farmers, primarily from Punjab, clashed with the Haryana Police at two border points between the states. The protesters faced tear gas and water cannons as they attempted to break through barricades blocking their march to Delhi. Beyond the demand for a legal guarantee on MSP, the farmers have put forth a comprehensive list of demands. These include the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission's recommendations, pension for farmers and farm laborers, farm debt waiver, withdrawal of police cases, justice for the victims of the Lakhimpur Kheri violence, reinstatement of the Land Acquisition Act, 2013, and compensation for the families of farmers who lost their lives during the previous agitation in 2020-21.

The positive progress made in the recent talks, coupled with the commitment to continue discussions, offers hope for a peaceful resolution. As both sides work towards finding common ground, the farmers' demands for fair and supportive policies remain at the forefront of the negotiations, aiming to ensure the well-being and prosperity of the farming community in India.
