Biplab Deb Keen on Tripura Politics Comeback, Awaits BJP's Nod
Following a significant victory in the Lok Sabha election, Biplab Kumar Deb, a prominent BJP leader, has voiced a preference for returning to the political landscape of Tripura. Despite his readiness to serve in any capacity as decided by the party, Deb's inclination towards state politics remains evident. His leadership previously brought an end to a 25-year-long communist dominance in Tripura in 2018, leading him to serve as the Chief Minister before being succeeded by Manik Saha, the current Tripura BJP president and Chief Minister, after the 2023 assembly elections.

As a newly elected Rajya Sabha MP, Deb achieved a notable victory over Asish Kumar Saha of the Congress by a margin of over six lakh votes in the West Tripura Lok Sabha constituency. This win not only underscores his political acumen but also highlights the shifting dynamics within Tripura's political arena. Deb's desire to reassume a significant role in state politics underscores his commitment to the development and governance of Tripura.
Deb's candidature for the Lok Sabha seat came as a surprise, even to him. Initially, it was anticipated that incumbents Pratima Bhoumik and Rebati Tripura would contest from their respective constituencies. However, a call from Union Home Minister Amit Shah changed the course for Deb, leading him to contest and win from West Tripura. This victory was attributed to several factors, including the diminishing presence of Congress in the state and strategic alliances formed by the BJP.
The former Chief Minister emphasized the need for focused development in Tripura, particularly in creating job opportunities for the youth through sectors like tourism. He highlighted unmaterialized plans from his tenure as Chief Minister, such as leasing out the IGM building to Apollo Hospitals and enhancing spiritual tourism through the facelift of Tripureswari temple in Gumati district. These initiatives aim at not only boosting employment but also at promoting Tripura as a destination for medical and spiritual tourism.
Deb's commitment to state development is evident from his plans to collaborate closely with Chief Minister Manik Saha. The duo aims to address critical issues such as industrial growth and employment generation, which are vital for the state's progress. With a clear vision for Tripura's future, Deb's role as an MP and his potential return to state politics could significantly influence the state's trajectory towards development and prosperity.
