Bihar Bags Lion's Share Of Budget Funds For Roads, Airports And More
In a significant announcement during the Union Budget 2024-25, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman allocated Rs 26,000 crore for the development of road infrastructure in Bihar. This substantial investment is aimed at enhancing connectivity and promoting economic growth in the region.
The Bihar government's requests for loans from multilateral banks will also be expedited, ensuring timely financial support for various developmental projects. This move is expected to facilitate smoother and faster implementation of critical infrastructure initiatives.

Furthermore, the Budget includes provisions for setting up new airports, medical colleges, and sports infrastructure in Bihar. These developments are anticipated to boost the state's overall infrastructure, providing better healthcare, enhanced connectivity, and improved sports facilities for the residents.

This decision follows the Finance Ministry's denial of Special Category Status to Bihar, referencing a 2012 report that concluded the state does not fulfill the necessary criteria. The ruling has sparked significant backlash from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), with leader Lalu Prasad calling for the resignation of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. The report cited factors such as hilly terrain and low population density as essential criteria for Special Category Status, which Bihar does not satisfy.
