Indian Medical Association Appeals to Mamata Banerjee for Security Amidst Bengal Doctors' Hunger Strike

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to address the grievances of junior doctors on hunger strike in Kolkata. The IMA emphasised that a secure working environment is essential, not optional. In a letter, they highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting that the young doctors have been fasting for nearly a week and require immediate attention.

IMA Appeals for Doctor Safety in Bengal

The junior doctors from R G Kar Medical College and Hospital initiated their protest after a colleague was allegedly raped and murdered on August 9. Their hunger strike reached its fifth day on Thursday. The IMA expressed its support for the doctors' demands, urging Banerjee to act swiftly. They stressed that the West Bengal government has the capacity to meet these demands.

Protest Demands and Government Response

The protesting doctors are seeking justice for their deceased colleague, the removal of Health Secretary N S Nigam, and the establishment of task forces. These task forces would ensure essential facilities like CCTV, on-call rooms, and washrooms at their workplaces. The IMA reiterated that peace and security are fundamental requirements, not luxuries.

Initially, the junior doctors ceased work following the tragic incident on August 9. They halted their protest after 42 days on September 21, following assurances from the state government to address their concerns. However, dissatisfaction with unmet promises led them to resume their indefinite fast at Dorina Crossing in Dharmatala last Saturday evening.

IMA's Appeal for Resolution

The IMA urged Banerjee to resolve these issues as both an elder and head of government. They expressed confidence in her ability to safeguard the lives of these young medical professionals. The entire medical community in India is closely monitoring the situation and hopes for a positive outcome.

The IMA's letter underscored the importance of addressing these demands promptly. They believe that fulfilling these requests will ensure a safer working environment for all medical staff in West Bengal. The association remains hopeful that Banerjee will take decisive action to bring about a resolution.

As the hunger strike continues, there is growing concern within the medical fraternity across India. Many are looking to Banerjee for leadership in resolving this crisis and ensuring justice for the affected doctors.
