Ashoka Chakra: Family proud of late IAF Garud commando Jyoti Prakash Nirala

The family members of Indian Air Force (IAF) Garud Commando Corporal Jyoti Prakash Nirala, who lost his life in Bandipora encounter expressed their pride on their son's sacrifice.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) Garud Commando Corporal Jyoti Prakash Nirala has been posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, the country's highest peacetime gallantry award.

Speaking to ANI, Tej Narayan Singh said,''I am extremely proud that the Government is recognizing the sacrifice of my son.''

Ashok Chakra is India's highest peacetime military award that will be awarded to Indian Air Force (IAF) Commander Corporal Jyoti Prakash Nirala posthumously for his service to the nation by President Ram Nath Kovind. The award will be received by his family on the 69th Republic Day.

Nirala was part of the Indian Air Force's crack Garud commando unit and was engaged in anti-terror operations in Kashmir.

Nirala was only 31 when he attained martyrdom while fighting with Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) operatives in Hajin area of Jammu and Kashmir on November 18 last year.

He single-handedly shot dead at least two LeT operatives, including Owaid alias Obama, the nephew of 26/11 plotter Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi.

Nirala had joined the IAF in 2005 and was a "corporal" when he was martyred.
