Hyderabad Metro Phase-I Takeover Approved In Assembly As State Eyes Smoother Expansion Plans

The Telangana Legislative Assembly on Saturday passed a resolution backing the state government's decision to take over Phase-I of the Hyderabad Metro Rail project from infrastructure major Larsen & Toubro (L&T), marking a significant move in the future planning of the city's metro expansion.

Hyderabad Metro Phase 1 Takeover

Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy moved the resolution in the House and said the government had taken the decision after examining the technical, legal and administrative implications. The move is aimed at ensuring smoother execution of upcoming metro phases and avoiding potential delays in approvals.

State Pushes For Metro Expansion Under Unified Control

Speaking in the Assembly, Revanth Reddy said Hyderabad Metro Phase-I covers 69 km. He added that the state government has already submitted proposals to the Centre for the next stages of expansion.

According to the chief minister, Phase-II A is planned across 76.4 km, while Phase-II B will extend over 86.1 km. He indicated that the government wants all future metro development to move forward under a more unified framework.

Reddy also noted that allowing Phase-I to continue under private management could create administrative complications and may slow down the approval process for the upcoming corridors.

Government Says Private Management Could Delay Future Approvals

Explaining the rationale behind the decision, the chief minister said the state had carefully studied the implications before deciding to bring Phase-I under Hyderabad Metro Rail Ltd (HMRL).

He maintained that retaining private control over the existing network could become a hurdle for future metro expansion plans, especially when seeking clearances and coordination for the next phases.

Therefore, the government decided to take over Phase-I through HMRL as part of a broader strategy to streamline project management and strengthen integration across the metro system.

Revanth Reddy Seeks House Support, Says Move Will Benefit Hyderabad

While moving the resolution, Revanth Reddy urged the Assembly to support the proposal, saying the takeover would help improve Hyderabad's public transport network and further enhance the city's standing on the global stage.

He also thanked members of the House for extending support to the resolution during the discussion.

Congress MLA Balu Naik, who was in the chair at the time, later announced that the resolution had been adopted by the Assembly.

BRS Says Resolution Was Not Unanimous

The opposition, however, raised objections over the manner in which the resolution was pushed through.

Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLA T Harish Rao said the party's views were ignored and asserted that the resolution should not be described as unanimous. He also criticised the government while participating in the discussion on the Demands for Grants for 2026-27.

The development sets the stage for a major shift in how Hyderabad Metro's existing network and future expansion phases may be managed, with the state now seeking greater direct control over the city's mass transit infrastructure.
