Tamil Nadu Weather Update: Heavy Rains To Lash Chennai, KTCC Region For Next 2 Days
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued an orange alert for several districts in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Mayiladuthurai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Thiruvarur, and Nagapattinam, as heavy rains are expected on Tuesday, December 17.
Cyclonic Developments Behind the Rain

According to the RMC, an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the southeast Arabian Sea and adjacent Lakshadweep region persists at 3.1 km above mean sea level. Additionally, a cyclonic circulation over the South Andaman Sea and Southeast Bay of Bengal has led to the formation of a low-pressure area over the central parts of the South Bay of Bengal.
In its Monday statement, the RMC explained: "The low-pressure area is likely to intensify and move west-northwestwards towards the Tamil Nadu coast over the next two days."
Weather blogger R. Pradeep John, popularly known as the Tamil Nadu Weatherman, downplayed the chances of significant rainfall on Tuesday, stating: "There won't be much heavy rain along the North Tamil Nadu coast. It will be a normal day with isolated rains in the evening or night. Students, focus on exams, and office workers - carry on with your routine. Let's see how things look on the 18th!"
Rainfall Predictions for December 18
The RMC has issued orange alerts for Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, and Villupuram for Wednesday, predicting heavy rainfall in these districts.
Meanwhile, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Vellore, Ariyalur, Mayiladuthurai, and the Karaikal region are under a yellow alert, indicating moderate rainfall.
The weather alerts indicate varying levels of rainfall and safety precautions: a Yellow Alert signifies moderate rainfall, urging people to be cautious in low-lying areas and carry essentials like umbrellas; an Orange Alert warns of heavy rainfall, advising individuals to stay indoors if possible, stock up on essentials, and prepare for disruptions; while a Red Alert indicates extremely heavy rainfall, with a strong recommendation to follow evacuation instructions, avoid travel, and prioritize safety.
Chennai and coastal Tamil Nadu have experienced significant rainfall this December due to cyclonic activity, contributing to the seasonal monsoon pattern.
