Tamil Nadu Weather Update: Chennai To Touch 40°C Today; Light Rains In Some Areas Predicted
Chennai is expected to touch 40°C for the first time this year. However, light rains can bring some respite on Tuesday in the capital city of Tamil Nadu.
Chennai To Sizzle Today
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, the maximum temperature during the day is likely to reach 39-40°C today. However, some areas might witness thunderstorms and lightning with light rain.

R Pradeep John of Tamil Nadu Weatherman said in a post on Facebook: "Sizzling day ahead for Tamil Nadu - Today high chances for Chennai (Meenambakkam) to register its 1st 40 C of the year. Many stations crossed 39 C in Tamil Nadu and surprise exclusion in the list was Velllore with rains there previous day. Today vellore will be back in the reckoning in the race. But Madurai is by far the hottest place in Tamil Nadu now.
Madurai Boils At 41.0°C
Madurai Airport recorded the highest maximum temperature of 41.0°C over Tamil Nadu. It is followed by Karur (40.5°C), Erode (40.4°C) and Madurai City (40.4°C).
Trichy Airport recorded 39.9°C, Palayamkottai - 39.6°C, Chennai Airport - 39.4°C, Cuddalore - 39.0°C and Chennai City - 39.0°C.
No Large Changes In The Temperature
"No large change in maximum temperature during Day 1 (13.05.2025) to Day 3 (15.05.2025) and thereafter, slight falling tendency at a few pockets during Day 4 (16.05.2025) & Day 5 (17.05.2025) over Tamilnadu, Puducherry and Karaikal area," the RMC said in its daily bulletin.
Dharmapuri and Karur Paramathi recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 23.0°C in the plains of Tamil Nadu. The RMC has predicted heavy rains today and tomorrow in Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts; Nilgiris, Theni and Dindigul districts.
Rains For Next 2 Days In Parts Of Tamil Nadu
"West Tamil Nadu districts like Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Erode, Dindugul, Virdhunagar, Theni, Krishnagiri have chance for Thunderstorms. Parts of Bangalore has chance of rains. Kerala will again see widespread thunderstorms across most districts," the weather blogger added.
