Senior Karnataka politician, former Chief Minister (CM), and Former External Affairs Minister of India Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna-SMK to his friends and the inner circle- breathed his last on Tuesday morning. The 92-year-old leader, who had been battling age-related ailments for several months, left behind a rich legacy of over four decades in public service.

SM Krishna's political journey began as an independent MLA, eventually joining the Congress party, where he rose to prominence. Over his illustrious career spanning 43 years, Krishna served as a legislator, minister, Chief Minister, Governor, and Foreign Minister, becoming a beloved figure in his home district of Mandya and across India.

SM Krishna Final Journey route

Elected as Karnataka's 16th Chief Minister, Krishna led the state during challenging times, including severe drought, the Cauvery water dispute, and the high-profile kidnapping of actor Rajkumar. Despite these hardships, his contributions to Karnataka's development earned him widespread admiration.

The passing of SM Krishna has left a void in Karnataka's political and social landscape. Leaders across party lines and citizens from all walks of life are mourning the loss of a visionary leader who played a pivotal role in shaping the state's modern development.

Public can pay homage in Sadashiva Nagar

The late leader's mortal remains will be kept at his residence in Sadashiva Nagar, Bengaluru, for public viewing throughout Tuesday. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced that this arrangement would allow the public to pay their last respects before the remains are transported to Krishna's hometown, Somanahalli, Maddur.

Last Rites Scheduled for Wednesday

SM Krishna's last rites will be conducted on Wednesday evening at the Coffee Day premises in Somanahalli in Maddur, a place dear to him. The venue, which he had gifted to Cafe Coffee Day, is being prepared for the ceremony, with cleaning work underway on a two-and-a-half-acre area.

The delay in the funeral is to accommodate relatives traveling from abroad.

For the unversed, SM Krishna had constructed a sprawling house in Somanahalli, a place close to his heart and fondly regarded as his home. After relocating to Bengaluru, the house remained vacant. Later, he entrusted it to Coffee Day, managed by his late son-in-law Siddhartha. Whenever Krishna visited Mandya, he used to visit Coffee Day, a place he cherished deeply. His funeral will be conducted on the Coffee Day premises, which held special significance for him. Preparations for the final rites are underway across a two-and-a-half-acre area at the site.

Final Journey Route

The journey of Krishna's mortal remains will begin from his Sadashivanagara residence at 8 a.m. on Wednesday. The route includes stops at several locations for public viewing:

  • Kengeri: A brief halt for last respects.
  • Bidadi: A short stop for final darshan.
  • Ramanagara: Another pause for the public to pay tribute.
  • Channapatna: The route then proceeds to Maddur.

From Maddur, the procession will culminate at Somanahalli, where the final rites will take place.

SM Krishna's leadership, resilience, and vision have left an indelible mark on Karnataka and Indian politics. As the state bids farewell to this iconic leader, his contributions to governance and development will continue to inspire generations.
