Karnataka weather alert: The spell of rainy evenings and gusty winds is expected to continue across Karnataka, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing fresh alerts for the next five days.

According to the IMD latest forecast on April 16, many districts including Bengaluru can expect light to moderate rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds up to 50 kmph.

Karnataka Weather Alert Bengaluru to Experience Light Rain As IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Multiple Districts

The changing weather is due to multiple weather systems - including cyclonic circulations over southwest Rajasthan, East Madhya Pradesh, and east Assam - along with troughs extending across several regions, which are expected to bring rain and instability.

Yellow Alert Districts:

On April 16, IMD has issued weather alerts for 14 districts across Karnataka. These include Haveri, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu, Kolar, Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Mysuru, Mandya, Chamarajanagar, and Ramanagara. The forecast indicates light to moderate rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds up to 50 kmph across these regions.

On April 17, the alert extends to 16 districts, which are Haveri, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Tumakuru, Hassan, Kodagu, Chikkaballapur, Kolar, Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Mysuru, Mandya, Chamarajanagar, and Ramanagara. The weather is expected to remain unsettled with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds likely to continue.

On April 18, the IMD forecast covers 11 districts: Tumakuru, Hassan, Kodagu, Mysuru, Chamarajanagar, Chikkaballapur, Kolar, Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Mandya, and Ramanagara. These areas are likely to experience intermittent rain, with thunderstorms and gusty winds making conditions more unstable.

On April 19, a total of 10 districts are under alert: Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu, Mysuru, Mandya, Ramanagara, Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, and Kolar. The forecast includes thunderstorms and moderate rainfall, with winds expected to pick up during the evening and night hours.

On April 20, the alert has been extended to 19 districts: Bidar, Kalaburagi, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Ballari, Shivamogga, Chitradurga, Chikkamagaluru, Tumakuru, Hassan, Kodagu, Chikkaballapur, Kolar, Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Mysuru, Mandya, Chamarajanagar, and Ramanagara. These areas will likely see thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds up to 50 kmph, with the possibility of light to moderate rainfall.

Vijay, a well-known weather blogger who runs the X (formerly Twitter) handle Namma Karnataka Weather, pointed out that wind convergence typical of the May season has arrived nearly two weeks early this year. He added that this could lead to intermittent spells of rain rather than continuous showers.

He also mentioned chances of isolated rain in Bengaluru and surrounding areas this evening. Areas across southern Andhra Pradesh and northern Tamil Nadu, including Tirupati, Chittoor, Vellore, and Krishnagiri, may also receive thunderstorms.

Bengaluru Weather Forecast:

According to IMD Bengaluru, the city is likely to see partly cloudy skies with light rain or thundershowers over the next few days, accompanied by winds reaching 30-40 kmph.

From April 16 to 19, Bengaluru residents can expect partly cloudy skies through the day, with light rain or thunderstorms likely during the evening or night. The showers may be accompanied by gusty winds, so it's best to keep those umbrellas handy if you're stepping out late.
