BMRCL Plans 5G Boost To End Mobile Network Issues For Namma Metro Passengers
The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has taken a significant step to enhance mobile network connectivity for over 8 lakh passengers who rely on the metro daily. To address ongoing complaints about poor mobile network reception during train journeys, BMRCL has invited tenders for the installation of 5G network small cells on metro pillars.
The tender specifically focuses on deploying 5G small cells in elevated sections along Metro Phase-1 routes, including the East-West, North-South corridors, Reach-5, and Reach-6 sections. Interested parties must submit their e-tenders by 3 pm on January 29 or January 30, depending on the section.

BL Yashavanth Chavan, chief public relations officer of Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) highlighted the benefits of this initiative, stating that the deployment will greatly enhance connectivity for metro passengers. "The 5G network will also benefit motorists traveling alongside the metro corridors," he said.
By installing 5G shells on metro pillars, passengers will experience upload speeds of 65 Mbps and download speeds of up to 1.45 Gbps within a range of 200 meters. The 5G network is said to be 50% more advanced than 4G, ensuring uninterrupted and faster connectivity for commuters.
Additionally, companies bidding for the tender will be allowed to conduct surveys on available metro pillars to streamline the expansion of 5G services.
Metro passengers, who often face connectivity issues during their commutes, have expressed optimism about the development. "This is a much-needed upgrade. Consistent network access is crucial, especially for those who work on the go," a regular commuter said.
Once the 5G network installation is complete, BMRCL expects to provide seamless connectivity throughout the metro journey, effectively resolving passenger complaints about network disruptions.
