Tokyo, April 13: Twenty-two people were injured after an earthquake measuring 6.3 on Richter Scale shook Japan on Saturday. Seven of the injured, mostly elderly people who tried to flee in face of the danger and tripped, were in a serious condition. No death was reported.

Rooftop tiles were broken while walls developed cracks in houses as a result of the quake, according to the Meteorological Agency and Japanese TV news footage. The agency had initially said that the magnitude was 6 but later upgraded it.

The epicentre of the quake was Awaji Island, just south of Kobe, at a depth of 15 kilometres. It was in this region where a quake of 7.2 magnitude killed nearly 6,500 people in 1995.
