Facebook post creates riot-like situation in Meerut, 12 hurt

Meerut, April 6: At least twelve people received severe injuries when angry members of a community hurled stones at a mini-truck and a bus carrying a marriage party in Meerut on Friday, April 5.

According to police sources, the angry mob began protesting following an inflammatory statement was posted on popular social networking site Facebook which is also known as FB.

Police dispersed the crowd who gathered on streets raising slogans and pelting stones. Police arrested many people in connection with the recent violence in the city.

Police officials informed that security has been beefed up in sensitive areas of the city so that tensions can not be escalated following the FB post.

Raki Raj, a local, meanwhile, filed a complaint against the person who had posted the inflammatory statement on the social networking site. RK Vishwakarma, the Inspector General of Police (Law and Order), informed that police has already registered a case against the accused.

This was not the first time when Meerut experienced riot-like situation over Facebook post. People in the city had experienced similar kind of situations in 2011 when FB posts erupted against few particular community.
