Newquay in UK seeing more booze, sex on the beach than Ibiza of Spain

London, Aug 16 (ANI): Newquay, on Cornwall's north coast in Britain is being seen as the new Ibiza as more and more youngsters are flocking to it for cheap booze, endless bar crawls and sex on the beach.

In years gone by, the youngsters would hop on cheap flights to Spain, but with the economic slump, they have made Newquay their destination for fun.

The resort, which was once best known as a quiet fishing town and still with a population of only 20,000 or so, is serviced by 27 bars and clubs whose tills ring non-stop throughout the summer season.

Now gangs of drunken girls and boys roam Newquay's bars and clubs, too often ending the night in the gutter or shovelling fast food down their necks.

Last year 6,500 unaccompanied 16 to 18-year-olds from across the UK descended in the first three weeks of July, turning Newquay into a scaled-down British version of Ibiza clubbing capital San Antonio.

Last month alone 11,000 cans of lager and seven litres of spirits were seized from underage revellers and police made 22 arrests in a show of force against the rampaging teenagers.

At Newquay's train station and nearby airport, cops seized more than 500 pounds worth of cocaine in a single day.

One group of girls revealed they used to go to Ibiza before it become too expensive.

"In Newquay you have the same things - sand, sea and sex. Why fly to Spain when it's on your doorstep?" the Sun quoted a girl as saying.

"I've slept with two blokes this week already. But what happens in Newquay stays in Newquay," she added.

Emergency services are stretched to the limit. To prevent a repeat of last year's problems, cops patrol beaches on the lookout for underage drinkers.

Newquay Town Residents' Association reckon cops are curbing the louts.

"There has been stronger policing, responsive licensing, visits from the Home Office and a feeling the town is slowly changing," chairman Dave Sleeman insisted.

But one resident said: "The bar and club scene is bigger than ever. The summer is ruined by people on the lash. They have no respect." (ANI)
