Pakistan blocks Youtube after Facebook

Islamabad, May 20: Pakistan blocked the video sharing website Youtube, for hosting 'sacrilegious' content, the day after denying the access to Facebook over the nation.

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) directed the internet service providers to block the website. Most internet users were unable to access the website, by late afternoon.

The new move signals a growing internet crackdown against sites considered offensive for the Muslim culture.

Lahore high court had ordered to block Facebook till May 31, though it had received the petition to ban the social networking site completely, by the Islamic Lawyer's Forum. The court had urged the foreign ministry to bring the issue of the blasphemous caricatures of Prophet Mohammed at international fora and to register a protest with the concerned countries.

According to the Court's order, the Information Technology ministry ordered the PTA to block Facebook and any such links displaying 'objectionable' content or derogatory images.
