Designer Anand Jon gets lifer for sex crimes

Los Angeles, Sep 1: The Indian-American fashion designer Anand Jon Alexander charged with sexually assaulting seven girls was sentenced to 59 years of imprisonment on Monday, Aug 31.

While the prosecutors argued that he assaulted young women by promising them a career in modelling, Jon Anand who acted as his own attorney asked for a new trial.

He argued that he needed a new trial because of juror and prosecutorial misconduct, and inadequate defence. However, the motion was denied.

Convicted with 16 charges including rape and sexual assault, Jon must serve 14 years in state prison before he begins to serve a 45-year-to-life sentence.

He also faces charges in New York and Texas and if he is sentenced in the other states, those sentences will add on to the present sentence.
