Surat airport to have night landing system shortly
Surat, Nov 18 (UNI) Surat airport in South Gujarat will have a night landing facility from January 2009.
The airport authorities have imported an Instrument Landing System from Germany at a cost of Rs two crore.
According to Surat airport authorities, the night landing system would be installed within two months.
A K Varma, Airport controller, Surat Airport, told UNI that the night landing system will ensure smooth operations during fog and rainy atmosphere too at the airport. Modern terminal building, Air Traffic Control tower, Fire station, DVAR systems have already commenced functioning at the airport.
The runway has also been expanded to 2,250 metre recently.
Eight out of ten diamonds sold in the world are polished in Surat.
It is a major production centre for synthetic textiles in India.
Neighboring Hazira boasts of an impressive list of corporate bigwigs such as Reliance, Essar, Larsen and Toubro, Shell, and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd, just to name a few.
However, Surat got its airport after more than a decade long struggle.
