Centre delaying legislation to protect workers: Union
Tiruchirapalli, Nov 18 (UNI) The AITUC affiliated Construction Workers Union has criticised the Centre for the inordinate delay in enacting a comprehensive protection legislation to safegard the interest of unorganised sector workers.
The Union, in a press release today said a resolution to this effect was adopted at the State Committee meeting held here on Sunday.
Of the total workforce of the country, 90 per cent were unorganised sector workers, the resolution said adding the Centre had informed that the Cabinet had already taken a decision to enact the comprehensive legislation in the last session of Parliament. But it has not taken any initiative for enacting the legislation which will provide legal and social protection to the unorganised workers.
The Centre should come forward to enact the legislation by accepting the recommendations of the Parliament Standing Committee with immediate effect, the committee in another resolution said.
The committee urged the Tamil Nadu Government to convene a tripartite meeting to frame guidelines for streamlining the procedures for enrolling members and augmenting financial resources of the Board.
Another resolution adopted by the committee favoured a political solution to the Lankan Tamils issue and condemned the Sri Lankan government attitude to find a military solution.
