Jalandhar, Sep 22 (UNI) Dograi Day was observed with solemn dignity today at the Dograi War Memmorial here to commemorate the famous battle of Dograi, probably the hardest fought battle of the 1965 War.
JAT battalion captured Dograi on September 22, after heavy fighting. The enemy suffered heavy casualties of 509 killed, 400 wounded while 100 soldiers, including officers were taken as Prisoners of War (POW).
On the home side, 5 officers and 76 soldiers made the supreme sacrifice on the battlefield while 11 officers and 147 soldiers were wounded.
For the heroic deeds in the Battle of Dograi, the brigade was awarded three Mahavir Chakras, eight Vir Chakras, 15 Sena medals, 10 Chief of Army Staff Commendation Cards and 33 Mention-in-Dispatches.
The JAT battalion was conferred with the Battle Honour of Dograi'.
Major General PS Paul, General Officer Commanding Panther Division, Colonel OJS Khangura, officiating Commander Dograi Brigade and other senior officers of Dograi Brigade paid homage to the martyrs at the Dograi War Memorial.
