Presidential election on Sep 6 in Pakistan

Islamabad, Aug 22 (UNI) Pakistan's Election Commission today announced the schedule for election of new President, fixing September 6 as the polling date for the purpose.

The schedule came four days after President Pervez Musharraf stepped down amid threats of impeachment by the ruling coalition of Pakistan Peoples' Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) which came to power after the February 18 general elections.

The schedule was announced against the backdrop of reports that the PPP would nominate its Co-Chairperson Asif Ali Zardari for the post.

''The nomination papers will be submitted by August 26, scrutiny of the papers will be on August 28 while candidates can withdraw their papers by August 30,'' Secretary, Election Commission Kunwar Dilshad told mediapersons in Islamabad.

Polling would be held simultaneously at the national and provincial assemblies and the Senate, the President's electoral college, from 1000 hrs (local time) till 1500 hrs on September 6.
