Andhra Pradesh Government's reservation proposal gets conditional clearance

New Delhi, August 5 : The Andhra Pradesh Government's proposal of four percent reservation for the Backward Classes was given conditional clearance by the Supreme Court today.

Yesterday, the Congress Government in Andhra Pradesh had approved the recommendation of the Cabinet Sub-Committee providing 33 per cent reservation to the Backward Classes in Legislative bodies.

Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy had said, ''A resolution in this regard would be adopted in the Assembly in the coming Monsoon Session in support of 33 per cent reservation to the Backward Classes. The adopted resolution would be sent to the Centre.''

While briefing media persons after the Cabinet meeting, Information and Public Relations Minister A. Ramanarayana Reddy had said that the Cabinet ratified the recommendation, submitted by the three-member Committee at the meeting.

The Backward Classes constitute a majority of the population in Andhra Pradesh.
