Brit girl's chopped body recovered from suitcase in Brazil
London, Aug 1 : A suitcase carrying the dismembered body of a 17-year-old British girl has been recovered from the Meia Ponte River in Brazil.
It is alleged that Cara Marie Burke, from London, was killed by her Brazilian boyfriend Mohamed D'Ali Carvalho, who also took photographs of her mutilated remains on his mobile phone before going out to a party.
Santos is under arrest and the police have claimed that he has confessed to the heinous crime in the central city of Goiania, 120 miles from the capital Brasilia.
The Brazilian lived in London illegally until three months earlier, and wanted to marry Cara just to get a British citizenship.
It is alleged that he killed Cara with 25cm long butcher's knife to prevent her from telling his family members about his cocaine addiction.
His mobile was allegedly found to contain images of her butchered remains, with one image showing her decapitated head placed on top of her body in the style of a Taliban execution video.
"The crime has signs of premeditation. He called Cara to his apartment, put the music on high volume and killed her with knife blows. He then took her body to the bathroom and then he went off to a party. It was only the following day he dismembered the girl's body," The Telegraph quoted a spokesman for the public security secretariat in Goias state, as saying.
He said: "He took various photos of the chopped-up body with his cellphone's camera, including photos like those of the Taliban."
It was when the pictures of the suitcase containing Cara's remains were broadcasted on an international Brazilian channel, that her family recognised her from a tattoo she had saying "Mum".
Santos later told the police that he had put the arms, legs and head in a separate bag that he threw in the river in a different location.
Local police chief Major Claudio de Oliveira Silva said the pair were friends but not boyfriend and girlfriend, and it was Santos who paid for their flights to Brazil and in return Cara had agreed to marry him so he could stay permanently in Britain.
A police source said: "He was in the UK illegally and it's probable that he was interested in getting married in order to allow him to stay in the UK."
