A school for deprived children in Punjab
By Ravinder Singh
Wai Puin, Apr 21 : 'Akal Purkh Ki Fauj', a non-governmental organization has initiated a programme to edify the poor children in the border belt of Punjab.
They are some 400 poor and deprived children from some 20 villages who attend the school to imbibe quality education at village Wai Puin.
'Akal Purkh Ki Fauj' instituted this school to offer good education to children in remote areas. They are providing free education to the children from families who are below the poverty line.
"We have named the programme 'Vision 20-20', which reflects a clear image of the organization to nurture a child for 12 years and develop his or her skills. We also sincerely wish that the child should carry the mission further. It is necessary to develop a continuity to keep the mission going," said Jasvinder Singh Advocate, convener, Akal Purkh Ki Fauj.
Under the banner of 'Raising Sikh of the Future', the school gives preference to families with a girl child.
No longer will these children hesitate to communicate in English as special attention is being given to help them compete with students of urban areas.
"A majority of them work as labourers and have never dreamt of giving good education to their children. Now, parents are excited to see their children start going to school. When they see the child speaking in English parents feel good," said Ravinder Kaur, principal.
Beside academics, great emphasis is also laid on soft skills like table manners and politeness. Other significant features of the school include computer education, gurmat classes, cultural and sports activities.
Joginder Singh's grandchildren, who could never think of having such an education due to their financial situation, are now skilled and confident.
Poor farming families can now dream of their children receiving higher education.
"The education at this school is better than the government-run-schools. The children communicate in English," said Joginder Singh.
There are so many deprived families who hope their children get better education. Many organisations like Akal Purkh Ki Fauj are needed to fulfill those dreams.
