Who will punish erring Govt for sealing, asks CII

Bangalore, Nov 16: Confederation of Indian Industry President R Seshasayee today said the CII did not approve of punishing only the Delhi shop keepers in the ongoing sealing drive, but sought action against the Government officials who supported it.

Speaking at the 14th CII Quality Summit here, he said the Supreme Court's ''last word'' on punishing encroaching tradesmen was unquestionable. However, who could punish the Government whose officials colluded with the tradesmen by extending them a helping hand in committing such offences, he asked.

Stating that democracy had failed to usher in good governance in the country, Mr Seshasayee said that despite court's intervention in several areas, the various Governments had failed to improve governance which had reached the lowest ebb. The Government was not living up to the quality standards achieved by the industry, he opined.

Quoting editorial reports in the media, he said the argument that the loss of the traders should be made good by the Government was fine. ''But who is responsible for this. Who will punish the Government and how. If you slap a fine on a Government agency, it will be the tax payers' money that will be used to pay it. But who will punish the guilty officials,'' he asked.
